Time and a half: common questions

What does time and a half mean?
Time and a half means you are paid 1.5 times your ordinary hourly rate for the hours in question. Your normal hour, plus half an hour again.
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your ordinary hourly rate by 1.5, then by the hours worked. On $30 an hour, time and a half is $45, so six hours comes to $270. A quick mental shortcut is to halve your rate and add it back.
When does time and a half usually apply?
It is commonly the first step of overtime under many awards, and is often applied to Saturday work. Some evening and early morning shifts outside the span of ordinary hours also attract it. Double time is more usual for Sundays and public holidays.
Is time and a half calculated on my base rate or my total pay?
The multiplier normally applies to your ordinary base rate rather than your total earnings. Allowances such as tool or travel allowances are generally treated separately rather than being multiplied.
Does time and a half include casual loading?
It depends on the award. Some apply the 1.5 multiplier to the base rate and then add the loading, others apply it to the already loaded rate. The difference can be several dollars an hour, so check the wording rather than assuming.
